Juejin's Community-driven,
User-created Knowledge Lifecycle

Understanding the landscape

As a content-based community for developers, Juejin provides a platform for users to access and share helpful information, from coding techniques to workspace insights.
Content creators (influencers), content consumers (learners), and Juejin (the platform) thrive together in the lifecycle of user-created content and the community interaction.

How can we elevate the lifecycle
and empower both creators & learners?

Takeaways đź‘‘

🎯 Align user, stakeholder & business goals

Initially, I had the misled belief that users should be my first priority, regardless of other constraints or needs. Putting all my effort into coming up with some all-encompassing features and flows, I was faced with an unfeasible workload on the technical side as well as critiques regarding what business outcomes the designs could generate.
Listening attentively to my team’s sincere, straightforward, and interdisciplinary perspectives, I learned how to balance user needs with business objectives through research and evaluation, and that my job is more than designing for the users—a successfully-shipped design depends on helping the stakeholders achieve their goals as well.
Be user-centric, business-driven, and stakeholder-supportive!

⛳️ Understand, negotiate, and plan ahead

Intern as I was, I had the incredible opportunity to integrate existing designs into a design system, which was previously missing, while upgrading its components and user experience for Juejin. With a tight schedule, I needed to build the system along with several ongoing projects.
I remembered asking my team and myself again and again: What is the goal and priority of this & that project? How are these projects interrelated  (are there any user flows that cross)? What is the timeline (when delivering my designs to implement, will the engineers be able to develop according to the new design system, or need to stick to the current ones to ensure consistency in UX)? I found myself constantly negotiating with stakeholders, planning the work to be done, and examining designs throughout Juejin’s holistic landscape.
It was a very very challenging but rewarding & transformative experience—I learned how to design in real-world & industry settings, work like a strategist, and collaborate as a better team player. Design is more than creativity. Understand, negotiate, and plan ahead!
